THIS is jet skier Michael Scott who was killed when a fun day out turned to tragedy.
The popular 22-year-old roofer died at Sunderland Royal Hospital after he was pulled from the water
at South Hylton.
A witness today told the Echo how Michael, known as Scotty, was riding the jet ski up and down when
it "flipped and he flipped off it".
The man said: "He hit the water really hard. He tried to swim but he went back under.
"He wasn't doing anything wrong. It was just a tragic accident."
A fishermen went into the water and got Michael to the bank where he was pulled out.
A post-mortem examination was due to take place today to establish the cause of death, and an
inquest will take place in due course.
Flowers and messages have been left by the riverside below Claxheugh Rock in memory of Michael, who
was originally from Plains Farm, but moved to Thorney Close and later to Springwell.
His girlfriend Michelle Eltringham, 20 – an apprentice hairdresser and former Thornhill School
pupil – was in tears when she visited the scene yesterday and too upset to talk about her loss.
Many of Michael's friends were also there to pay their respects, including Sean and Rob Harland,
Alan Johnston, John Donnigan, Kyle Thompson, Warren Peverley, Gary and Nathan Cliff, and Justin Dee.
They remembered Michael – who had a brother, Mark – as "fearless" and a real joker who could
cheer up anyone.
"He was always smiling," said Justin. "He was a fantastic lad and a proper comedian.
"He never grumbled about anything.
"Everybody will definitely miss him. We're all still trying to take it all in."

Vicki Dodds said: "They say you don't no how much you love someone til they're gone and it's so
true."
Charlotte Kate wrote: "RIP Scotty. You were loved by millions. All my love goes out to Michelle and
all your family."
Kirsty Warrener added: "Scotty you will never be forgotten. You were a mint lad."
